About the Base
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Overview
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base sits northeast of Dayton, Ohio, spanning portions of Greene and Montgomery counties. The installation covers more than 8,000 acres — roughly 12.5 square miles — making it one of the largest Air Force bases in the United States. More than 100 associate units call WPAFB home, and the base supports approximately 47,000 aircraft operations each year across its two runways.
The base is divided into two distinct areas. Area A (Patterson Field) is the operational hub, home to the 88th Air Base Wing, medical facilities, family housing, and the commercial and recreation core at Kittyhawk Center. Area B (Wright Field) hosts the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC), and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. State Route 444 runs between the two areas.
The base has deep roots in American aviation history. Wilbur and Orville Wright tested experimental aircraft at what is now Huffman Prairie Flying Field — part of today's installation — starting around 1904. That legacy runs straight through to the modern era: WPAFB remains a global center for aerospace research, development, and acquisition.
