December in Dayton is legitimately good. Clifton Mill runs November 27 through December 30. Ice skating at RiverScape. The Nutcracker at Victoria Theatre. And the Oregon District for everything else.

This is the one. Clifton Mill has been putting on one of the country's largest holiday light displays since the 1980s. Over 5 million lights covering the old grist mill, the gorge, bridges, and grounds along the Little Miami River. There's a miniature village with hundreds of buildings, over 3,000 Santa Claus figurines collected from around the world, a live Santa in the workshop, and an hourly musical covered bridge show starting at 6 PM. Adults and kids both lose it. $15 per person, kids 3 and under free. Gates open 5 PM, lights on at 6 through 9 PM nightly.

RiverScape MetroPark puts in an outdoor ice skating ribbon along the Great Miami River every December. Right in the middle of downtown. Skate rental available on site. It's free to skate if you bring your own skates, or you can rent. Family friendly, usually running weekend afternoons and evenings. One of the nicer outdoor skating setups in the region and it's right in the middle of the city.

Victoria Theatre is a stunning 1866 venue in downtown Dayton and the Nutcracker production here is the Christmas tradition for a lot of local families. Multiple performances run through December. Good seats sell out early. Worth doing at least once if you have kids — the Victoria itself is worth seeing, and the production quality is high. Dress up a little.

The Air Force Museum runs free holiday programming in December. Past years have included holiday music performances in the atrium among the aircraft exhibits. Free admission and free parking as always. Call ahead or check the website to see what programs are scheduled for December 2026. A unique setting for a holiday event — hard to beat listening to Christmas music surrounded by aircraft.

Carillon Historical Park lights up its Christmas tree and runs holiday programming each December. The park's historic buildings and grounds look completely different with holiday lighting. The carillon bells are part of the experience — the tower has 57 bells and they program holiday music. Worth a visit especially if you haven't been to Carillon in a while.

Day Air Ballpark, 220 N Patterson Blvd · Downtown Dayton
The Dayton Dragons do a holiday lights event at Day Air Ballpark in December where you walk the warning track around the field surrounded by light displays. The ballpark looks completely different without a game in it and the lights are actually impressive. Kid friendly, good for a date night, and unlike anything else in the market. Check for their 2026 schedule closer to December.

A free drive-through holiday light display run by Washington Township through the park system. You drive through at your own pace with the radio tuned to their channel. Great option if you have young kids who would rather see lights from the warmth of the car. Low-key, free, and a solid tradition for the area. Check Washington Township's parks page for 2026 dates.

The Oregon District is the best neighborhood for independent holiday shopping in Dayton. Boutiques, galleries, vintage shops, record stores, and bookstores along Fifth Street. The kind of shopping where you actually find something interesting instead of another gift card. Shops extend their hours in December. Restaurants and bars are right there so you can make an afternoon of it.
