Lights Over Dayton: A Celebration of Flight

The Air Force Museum is putting on a 500-drone light show as part of America's 250th. The drones trace the history of flight across a 600-foot-wide canvas in the sky above the museum. Museum stays open until 9 PM, food trucks on the grounds, and the show starts at 10 PM with a live soundtrack on 95.3 The Eagle. Free admission and free parking. Rain date is June 27.

Pro tip: A second entrance opens at 5 PM to help with traffic. Get there early — this one will draw a big crowd from the base.

Easy to get to from the base and typically a lot less traffic than the bigger suburban events.

Ohio's largest single-day 4th of July celebration. The parade starts at 10 AM on E. Franklin Street and heads into Uptown Centerville. After the parade the street fair opens with arts and crafts vendors, an auto show, live entertainment, and plenty of food. Over 85,000 people come out every year.

Pro tip: If you're running the 5K it kicks off at 6:30 AM at the high school. Park early and walk in for the parade.

An all-day 4th of July celebration in Huber Heights with a little of everything. Parade at 10 AM along Chambersburg Road, then the festival at Thomas Cloud Park runs until 8 PM with food trucks, bands, a petting zoo, kids zone, and a beer garden. Fireworks cap the night at 10 PM. One of the best all-day setups in the region.

Right next to Wright-Patterson, Fairborn's parade has always had strong military energy. Starts at 10 AM on Broad Street, heads down Central Avenue, and ends at the corner of Main and Broad. Followed by a festival at Community Park in the afternoon with fireworks at 10 PM.

Pro tip: Stake out your spot on Central Avenue before 9:30 AM for a good view.

Pro tip: Park on a side street before 10:30 AM. The town is tiny and fills up fast. The afternoon at Gaunt Park is worth staying for.

Pro tip: Parking at the park fills up fast. Neighborhoods around Rotary Park are walkable and people park on side streets.

Kettering's Go 4th! is one of the best-organized fireworks events in the area. DJ music, bounce houses for kids (6 to 9 PM), roaming performers, food trucks, and the fireworks show runs 10 to 10:30 PM choreographed to music. Bring lawn chairs and a blanket. Rain or shine.

Pro tip: Leave alcohol, sparklers, tents, and pets at home. Accessible parking inside the park until 8:45 PM with a valid tag. Extra parking at the old Tenneco lot on Woodman Drive.

Troy has one of the nicest 4th of July settings in the whole region. The fireworks launch from the banks of the Great Miami River and the whole stretch of downtown between Adams and Market Street fills up with people. About 25 minutes north of Dayton and way more manageable than the bigger city shows.

Pro tip: Park downtown early and walk to the riverbank. It fills up fast but clears out quick after.
